Melanated Monday Black Business Spotlight: The Local Distro

Welcome to the first edition of the Melanated Monday Black Business Spotlight. This is where The Afropreneurial Community will showcase a Black-owned business that deserves more of our business. I only saw it as right to showcase the city in a positive light. I will judge every place on accessibility, atmosphere, professionalism, and of course their food/product.

1st stop on the list is The Local Distro nestled in the slowly gentrifying Salemtown located at  614 Garfield St, Nashville, TN 37208. This place is a fast casual restaurant with a market attached to it where you can get your bean chips and/or get your Cheetos, Fritos, and Doritos. It is a wonderful balance of healthy and guilty pleasures. There are some great things to highlight in regards to their business.

Being in the Salemtown/Germantown, parking lots are hard to come by so street parking is very present. This is the situation with Local Distro. There is a lot of street parking to park and get into the building. This is something normal with businesses in the area. It provides more room for establishments to build if you ask us! We need space for the community!

You instantly get a bodega/cafe hybrid feel walking in there. You can sit down for a meal or get a last minute item from laundry detergent to mayo for that sandwich you have been craving. Rha Radford, co-owner, greeted us with a warm smile and kind words. He took the time to get to know me and my girlfriend and gave us the history of how far the store has come along. Rha made us feel like we were family the moment we walked in the door. He was very personable.

The level of professionalism was incredible. Rha was on point with swift service making sure we weren’t standing around while keeping us engaged in conversation. He went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed whether it was silverware or cold beverages. He even gave us some business tips, get your own! Haha

Ashley and I ordered some Brisket and Jerk chicken tacos for early dinner before the sounds game Saturday evening. Let me tell you something, these were some of the best tacos I have had in my 9-year tenure in the city. The meat was soft, juicy, and flavorful. There was a special sauce they had on there that sealed the deal for me. I had 4 tacos but was full after the 3rd one! An immediate return is not a question! I hope to see you guys there soon!

We should go to next? Let us know in the comments!
